Nicoumalone is an anticoagulant. It is a derivative of coumarin and is marketed under the brand names of Sintrom and Sinthrome. Nicoumalone is also known as acenocoumarol.

Nicoumalone is prescribed to people with an increased tendency for thrombosis (thrombophilia) and works in a similar way to warfarin, as a vitamin K antagonist.

Nicoumalone takes about three days to produce its full anticoagulant effect and so faster acting anticoagulants such as heparin are usually used for the initial treatment of thrombosis.

The prothombin time (PT) is used to measure the anticoagulant effect of Nicoumalone and expressed as the International Normalised Ratio (INR). Regular blood tests are required to adjust the dosage to maintain a stable INR in the therapeutic range.
